The Perfect 3-Day Mont-Saint-Michel & Normandy Itinerary

Three unhurried days: the abbey and its bay, the coast at Granville, a Normandy market — and afternoons back at the manor.

The Mont-Saint-Michel rising from its bay in Normandy

The Mont-Saint-Michel deserves its reputation as one of France's extraordinary destinations, but there's much more to discover beyond the famous silhouette rising from the bay.

With three days, you can experience the Mont-Saint-Michel, Normandy's coastline, local markets, historic villages and regional food without turning your holiday into a race from one attraction to another.

Here's our idea of a relaxed three-day itinerary, using Le Manoir Ducey as your base.

Day 1 — The Mont-Saint-Michel and its bay

Start with the place everyone has come to see.

From Le Manoir Ducey, the Mont-Saint-Michel is approximately 20 minutes away, making an early start relatively painless.

Morning: discover the Mont-Saint-Michel

Give yourself plenty of time.

Rather than treating the Mont as a quick photo stop, walk towards it and enjoy how dramatically the landscape changes as you approach.

Once inside, explore the narrow streets climbing toward the abbey. The Abbey of the Mont-Saint-Michel is the highlight and rewards you with extraordinary architecture and views across the bay. Allow several hours for the complete visit.

Lunch around the Mont-Saint-Michel

After visiting the abbey, stop for lunch or explore the surrounding area before heading back into Normandy. There's no need to pack too much into the afternoon.

Afternoon: back to the manor

After a busy morning walking around the Mont-Saint-Michel, return to Le Manoir Ducey for a deliberately slow afternoon. Spend some time by the swimming pool, enjoy the garden or relax in the spa.

Back at the manor: the pool, the cedar, and nowhere else to be.

This is one of the advantages of staying nearby: the Mont-Saint-Michel doesn't need to consume the entire day.

Evening: dinner together

For large groups, some of the nicest evenings can be the simplest. Pick up local produce, prepare dinner together and enjoy an evening at the manor.

Day 2 — Granville and the Normandy coast

Your second day is about discovering a different side of Normandy. Head towards Granville and the coast for sea air, seafood and a change of scenery.

Granville: clifftop gardens, a working harbour and the open Channel.

Morning: explore Granville

Wander through Granville and discover its maritime character. Take your time exploring the streets and harbour before stopping for coffee.

Lunch by the coast

This is a good day to make lunch the main meal. Look for fresh seafood and regional produce, or buy something locally for a picnic if the weather cooperates.

Afternoon: discover the beaches

Spend the afternoon exploring the surrounding coastline and beaches. If you're travelling with children, leave enough time for them simply to enjoy the beach rather than trying to fit another attraction into the day. Then return to Ducey for the evening.

Day 3 — Markets, villages and a slower Normandy

After two days of sightseeing, use the third to experience everyday Normandy.

Morning: visit a local market

The market: the shortest route to understanding a region.

French markets are an excellent way to discover the region through its food. Look for seasonal vegetables, cheeses, bread, charcuterie and other Normandy specialities.

If you're staying in a self-catering property, this is also the perfect opportunity to choose ingredients for dinner.

Explore the countryside

Rather than setting another major tourist destination into the GPS, spend some time discovering the smaller towns, villages and countryside around you. Part of Normandy's appeal is precisely this slower pace.

Stop when somewhere looks interesting. Have coffee. Find a bakery. Walk beside the river.

Afternoon: enjoy the manor

Finish your trip with an afternoon where nobody has to go anywhere. Swim. Use the spa. Let the children play. Read underneath a tree. Open something cold and have an apéritif in the garden.

When travelling with a large family or several friends, having somewhere everyone can enjoy together is just as important as the attractions outside it.

Why stay several days near the Mont-Saint-Michel?

It can be tempting to treat the Mont-Saint-Michel as a single overnight stop. But staying longer changes the experience.

Instead of simply visiting one monument, you begin to discover Normandy itself — its coastline, markets, food, countryside and slower rhythm. It also allows you to visit the Mont-Saint-Michel without rushing.
